Our Client is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Backend Engineer to join its engineering team and build robust, scalable, and maintainable APIs and backend services. This position is ideal for a senior-level backend engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, writing clean and readable code, and taking significant ownership in a fast-paced startup environment.

The successful candidate will work closely with Frontend, Design, and Product teams to build scalable solutions supporting property investors, vendors, tenants, and internal operations teams. The ideal candidate will bring strong Java backend development experience, a deep understanding of data structures and algorithms, strong debugging and performance optimization skills, and a collaborative startup mindset.

Compensation: $130,000 – $170,000 per year
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain robust, scalable, and reliable APIs and backend services.
  • Write clean, minimal, readable, maintainable, and easy-to-understand code.
  • Develop backend solutions using Java and modern cloud infrastructure.
  • Design and implement services capable of supporting highly scalable applications and workloads.
  • Debug complex software issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across backend services and applications.
  • Develop concurrent code that effectively utilizes multi-core server environments.
  • Work closely with Frontend, Design, and Product teams to understand requirements and develop effective technical solutions.
  • Translate both detailed technical specifications and loosely defined business requirements into scalable software solutions.
  • Evaluate multiple possible approaches and select the most appropriate solution based on technical requirements, scalability, maintainability, and development velocity.
  • Contribute to solving fundamental problems across real estate sales, leasing, accounting, and maintenance coordination.
  • Collaborate with teammates through code reviews, technical discussions, whiteboarding sessions, and architecture conversations.
  • Participate in both in-person and remote technical whiteboarding sessions when team members are working remotely.
  • Maintain a balance between technical rigor and development velocity while avoiding unnecessary complexity and premature optimization.
  • Continuously improve engineering practices, technical processes, and personal development.
  • Take ownership of projects and technical problems with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Use modern and AI-powered engineering tools where appropriate to improve development efficiency and accelerate the delivery of high-quality software.
  • Contribute to a collaborative engineering culture focused on simplicity, scalability, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 to 7 years of professional backend software engineering experience in fast-paced environments with a high degree of ownership and autonomy.
  • Senior-level backend engineering experience is required.
  • Proven professional experience developing backend systems using Java.
  • Backend experience with Java on AWS is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
  • Strong experience debugging software, solving complex technical problems, and identifying and fixing performance bottlenecks.
  • Experience building scalable backend services and APIs.
  • Understanding of concurrent programming and the ability to write code that effectively utilizes multi-core servers.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and ability to produce clean, concise, readable code.
  • Experience working in a high-growth, fast-paced startup environment, preferably a seed through Series A company.
  • Strong ownership mentality and ability to operate independently with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to work effectively with Frontend, Design, Product, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • High work ethic with the ability to move quickly, take initiative, and make an immediate impact.
  • Open to using AI-powered tools to build and ship software.
  • Must be located in the United States and available to work within PST, MST, CST, or EST time zones.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing concurrent and highly scalable backend systems.
  • Experience optimizing applications running across multi-core server environments.
  • Experience working within an early-stage startup where engineers have significant ownership and autonomy.
  • Curiosity or previous experience working in the real estate technology space.
  • Interest in solving technical problems related to real estate sales, leasing, accounting, property operations, and maintenance coordination.
  • Strong interest in continuous technical and personal improvement.
  • Formal computer science education is not required; the team is open to self-taught engineers with strong demonstrated technical ability.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, a strong work ethic, and a collaborative mindset. They should be comfortable evaluating multiple technical approaches, balancing rigor with speed, and taking ownership from problem definition through production delivery.

Candidates with an interest in real estate technology and a desire to solve fundamental problems across sales, leasing, accounting, and maintenance coordination are particularly aligned with the nature of the role.
